Shore Snacks

by Suburban Family-- Editorial Staff

A weekend at the Shore isn’t really complete without some of the iconic snacks that help instill those happy memories and much-loved traditions that come with the beach. Whether it’s your favorite slice of pizza, pancakes at your family’s beloved breakfast spot, or that scoop of ice cream at the end of a night on the Boardwalk, the snacks we all know and love are a big part of the Shore. Looking for some bites to add to your beach repertoire? Check out these 10 options.

Depeche a la Mode
Fine Fellows Creamery, Cape May
A group of music lovers has launched a new ice cream shop right on Beach Avenue, and all of their sundaes have a sweet ring to them. This option tops a seasonal slice of pie with butter pecan ice cream and a matching fruit topping. You can also take your pick from almost 20 ice cream flavors and 21 toppings if you are opting for a scoop or two.

Swamp Sauce Wings
The Chicken or the Egg, Beach Haven
This hot spot—popularly known as The Chegg—has become known for their variety of wings, which includes a coating of Swamp Sauce. Bone-in wings are tossed with a specialty sweet Cajun sauce that packs a tiny bit of heat, then served with your choice of blue cheese or ranch and celery. They are one of their milder wing choices, but still come loaded with plenty of flavor.

Classic Monkey Bread
Monkey Bread, Ocean City
Chunks of pillowy dough are coated in cinnamon sugar and butter, and baked to form a crispy, gooey exterior. It’s a great grab-and-go snack for sharing, and even comes in different, seasonal flavors. Add a few scoops of ice cream and some cinnamon sugar sauce to create a Monkey Bread sundae for an even more indulgent dish.

White Broccoli Pizza
Sam’s Pizza Palace, Wildwood
Sam’s is an almost-60-year tradition on the Wildwood Boardwalk, and their white broccoli pizza has earned its own reputation as well. Available as a pie or as one of the three regular slice options on the menu, this pizza is fully loaded with tons of cooked broccoli florets and lots of garlic, then finished with gooey mozzarella.

Buttermilk Pancakes
Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, Multiple Locations
Shore breakfasts go hand-in-hand with Uncle Bill’s, which has become a pancake empire all along the Jersey Shore. Their massive buttermilk pancakes come in all sorts of flavors—including classics like chocolate chip and blueberry and more unique takes like peach and banana nut—and always satisfy with whipped butter and plenty of syrup.

Tornado Dog
Hot Dog Tommy’s, Cape May
A Cape May favorite, this walk-up window serves some of the wackiest hot dogs you’ll find on the coast. Start with a beef Black Angus hot dog and top it with chili, shredded Cheddar, salsa, pickled banana peppers, mashed potatoes and sour cream. It’s a meal within a meal, and one hot dog that will leave you full well into dinnertime.

Sticky Buns
Aversa’s Bakery, Brigantine and Margate
The line out the door every weekend speaks to just what is being cooked up inside Aversa’s, as their gooey, chewy sticky buns are certainly worth waiting for. Each bun comes topped with your choice of raisins or walnuts for some added texture and flavor. We suggest getting there early, as they have been known to sell out regularly.

Clam Strips
Mike’s Seafood, Sea Isle City
Opened in 1911, Mike’s is a third-generation run seafood spot known for their fried and cooked options as well as their fresh fish and shellfish, but it’s these crispy clam strips that are ingrained in our memory. Hearty clams are sliced up, battered and deep-fried, then served with Mike’s house-made tartar sauce for dipping.

French Fries
Curley’s Fries, Wildwood
The rides and games at Morey’s Piers are instantly made all the better with a cup full of steaming hot, thick-cut crinkle fries from Curley’s. We’ve always loved dousing them in vinegar with an extra shaking of salt, but whether you get them with ketchup, cheese sauce or just stick with traditional plain, these golden beauties get our mouths watering well before we cross the bay.

Caramel Popcorn
Johnson’s Popcorn, Ocean City
It’s an unwritten rule in many families that you don’t leave Ocean City without a heaping tub of Johnson’s caramel popcorn. Just one look at these iconic plastic buckets is enough to make any Shore-goer nostalgic, and it’s only better when you can grab a handful straight from the source, served hot and crispy right on the Boardwalk.
