Ask the Expert: Segal and Iyer Orthodontics’

by suburban Family-- Editorial Staff

Orthodontic technology has come a long way in the past few years. These advances have revolutionized treatment methods, making it easier than ever to have the smile you've always dreamed of.

To help patients better understand the advances in orthodontic treatment, award-winning and nationally recognized orthodontists, Dr. Ross Segal and Dr. Monisha Iyer answered questions about what changes have occurred and what today's teenagers can expect.

Is there an alternative to those molds which used to gag me when I was a teenager?
Perhaps one of the most revolutionary changes in the orthodontic industry has been the use of 3D scanning. With a simple handheld wand, we are able to capture the information needed to create complete models of a patient’s teeth and gums. For patients, these three-dimensional images have eliminated the need for taking those goopy, uncomfortable impressions that often make us gag. Just as exciting is the ability for us to show the patient their virtual results the day of their scan. For doctors, 3D technology provides a much clearer and more detailed representation of the patient. This gives the orthodontist the ability to treat more accurately and have quicker turnaround times for all appliances, including Invisalign.

Does treatment still usually take two years or more?
Patients today have the option to significantly reduce their treatment time. Two advanced technologies make this possible: Acceledent and Propel. Acceledent’s effects are seen with only 20 minutes of daily use. Propel is completed chair-side every 10 to 12 weeks, as needed. These treatment modalities enable us to reduce treatment time by 30 to 50 percent. Orthodontists and patients are enjoying the multiple benefits of both systems, including reducing the incidence of “white spot” lesions, which occur during prolonged orthodontic treatment, as well as often completing treatment in less than a year’s time. When using these accelerated modes of technology, Invisalign patients can change their aligners every week instead of the recommended two-week interval and finish treatment in literally half the time it used to take with a conventional approach.
