Naturally Beautiful
Personal Expressions Hair Studio is using green beauty to give women healthier and more vibrant hair.

by Brittany Ann Morrisey

FUN FACT: MOST HAIR CARE PRODUCTS AND HEAT STYLING METHODS ARE DAMAGING TO YOUR HAIR. Little by little each blow dry and harsh color application chips away at the health of your hair until it’s dry, dull and hard to manage.

This is why Diane Hazelwood, owner of Personal Expressions Hair Studio, believes in offering organic, green beauty products and gentle hair styling at her salon in Haddonfield.

“We are able to get the same beautiful results without using products and techniques that cause not only damage to the hair but to the environment as well,” she says.

Two brands that the salon uses religiously are DevaCurl shampoos and conditioners and Organic Way (O-Way) hair dye.

All the ingredients of DevaCurl products are water soluble, so your hair will not be weighed down by residual buildup—giving you bouncier tresses that bring out your hair’s natural curl patterns or waves.

O-Way is another product line that cares about the long-term health of your locks. With the brand’s organic hair dye, your strands will not be stripped by ammonia like they are with most other hair coloring products.

“It was said for a long time ammonia was the only way to color hair,” Hazelwood says. “But after a lot of research, it was found that you can use oils and minerals and do the same thing and not only does it achieve the same result but it does it much more gently.”

Besides helping women achieve naturally beautiful hair, Hazelwood and her staff are committed to using organic products because it’s better for the environment. In fact, the hair studio is a “Certified Green Business” by the Haddonfield Business Association.

The other focus of Personal Expressions Hair Studio is education: Teaching women how to embrace their hair and not fight it.

“Embracing your hair is all about working with what your hair wants to do naturally,” Hazelwood says. “It’s doing the opposite of blow drying, flat ironing and chemical straightening because through those methods you’re only making your hair dry, brittle and dull.”

After years of washing and styling your hair a certain way, it can feel nerve-wracking to have to reverse course and learn to bring out the natural beauty of your hair, but with the encouragement and instruction of the stylists at Personal Expressions, gaining more beautiful and healthy tresses is possible.

“Very few people realize the potential their hair has,” Hazelwood says. “We want to help people see that potential.”
