Kendyl Cocco, Annie King and Laura Penalver, Medford
Shawnee senior Kendyl Cocco, (left), and juniors Annie King, (center), and Laura Penalver participated in the South Jersey National Organization for Women (NOW) Alice Paul essay contest. Out of the 97 entries in the contest, Penalver placed first and King placed second among the 11th-grade students and Cocco placed second in the 12th-grade category. The students were honored at the NOW monthly meeting.
Rishi Chauhan, Voorhees
Eastern Regional High School junior and member of the Gifted and Talented Program Rishi Chauhan spearheaded a team entry into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Inven-Team competition. The team came up with the idea of a water filtration system that would assist the community of Gulu, Uganda, to gather, filter and store clean water.
Kelly O’Brien, Moorestown
Eighth-grade Our Lady of Good Counsel School student Kelly O’Brien has been named the recipient of an Ethel Mae Hocker Scholarship to Camden Catholic High School from the Ethel Mae Hocker Foundation. After a rigorous interview process, O’Brien was one of three students chosen for the four-year, full tuition scholarship.
Joseph DelRossi, Washington Township
Joseph DelRossi, a Chestnut Ridge Middle School eighth-grade student, was chosen as a South Jersey Branch 57 winner in the Fleet Reserve Association’s (FRA) 2010-11 Americanism/Patriotism essay contest. DelRossi’s essay was submitted to compete against other FRA branch winners.
Naquia Unwala, Moorestown
Out of more than 1,000 entries into the Moorestown Upper Elementary School world language T-shirt contest, fifth-grade student Naquia Unwala’s design was chosen. Her particular design features the Eiffel Tower and a Roman aqueduct in Spain.
Chrisa Ramoundos, Mount Laurel
Chrisa Ramoundos, a sophomore at Lenape High School, placed third in the Introduction to Business Communications category at the New Jersey FBLA State Leadership Conference. To enter into the state event, Ramoundos also placed third at the South Regional Competitive Events in January.
Chris Andrews, Nico Cassia, Rocco Luciano, Jacob Nichols and Nick Panna, Washington Township
Bells Elementary School fourth-grade students Chris Andrews, Nick Panna, Jacob Nichols, Nico Cassia and Rocco Luciano were selected by their teachers as March students of the month for their hard work and enthusiasm toward learning.
Riley Eckert, Jacob Alford, Adam Dorfman, Sophia Fortuna, Emily Lynn and Taylor Miles, Marlton
All six Robert B. Jaggard Elementary students made it to the state level of the Reflection arts competition. At the state level, Riely Eckert and Adam Dorfman went on to receive Awards of Merit in the national PTA program.
Vignesh Vasu, Cherry Hill
Seventh-grade Rosa International Middle School student Vignesh Vasu participated in the Tri-County Coriell Science Fair and placed first in the behavioral and social sciences category for middle school students. Vasu developed an algorithm, a step-by-step procedure, to solve a Rubik’s Cube.
Caroline Brinkman, Moorestown
Caroline Brinkman, a second-grade South Valley Elementary School student, placed first in the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children’s statewide writing contest. The contest, open to students in kindergarten through second grade, posed the question, “How will the world grow and change in the next 20 years and what role will I play?”
Saylor Brisson , Moorestown
Eighth-grade William Allen Middle School student Saylor Brisson placed first in the individual competition at the fifth Annual Mathematics Competition, consisting of 22 schools and 156 seventh-and eighth-grade students. Brisson received a monetary prize and certificate.
Kathryn Dark, Haddonfield
Haddonfield Memorial High School senior Kathryn Dark was selected to the 2011 All-National Honor Ensembles. A member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Dark has been performing on the violin and viola for the past several years. She will perform in Washington, D.C., with the group in June.
