Flagg’s Garden Center: One Stop Shop

by Victoria Moorhouse

Flagg’s Garden Center provides for all your landscaping needs. When you’re on the hunt for a live holiday wreath, exotic evergreens and an award-winning landscape designer to manicure your yard, you won’t have to drive across the Garden State to find it all. Flagg’s Garden Center is your one-stop shop, with a huge variety of garden essentials.

Flagg’s Garden Center, a fixture in South Jersey for more than 50 years, began as a quaint roadside farm stand selling vegetables and flowers. But things have certainly changed since then. Today, the garden center has grown into a third-generation business with an extensive selection of first-rate plants, products and services that keep customers satisfied.

Providing Something for Everyone
It won’t be difficult to find something of interest with an inventory and stock like Flagg’s. “I think that our big draw is that we have a variety of products,” says owner Rich Flagg. The Moorestown-based garden center has an inventory filled with an array of ornamentals, trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, pond plants, houseplants and hardware supplies. But the garden center is also home to a selection of hard-to-find plants like Japanese umbrella pines and Japanese snowbell trees.

Plus, it’s always changing. Around the holidays, the store is decked out with evergreen garlands, Yankee candles and themed trees filled with novelty ornaments. Flagg’s Garden Center employs two in-house designers who can create custom live and artificial wreaths and arrangements.

“Some people will come in and specifically pick decorations that we have on display and the colors they want, and we will design something for them,” says Flagg.

Giving Helpful Advice
Sometimes, it’s nice to have a little help. Customers may not know what they’re looking for or why the trees in their yard aren’t doing so well. That’s where Flagg’s Garden Center comes in.

“If they are having problems with maintaining, we may come out to the site and evaluate it. We recommend what they can do to amend their planting beds for success, and can suggest plants that may be more conducive to their conditions,” says Flagg.

Customers can also receive specific diagnoses for their plant problems by bringing in a sample to the store. The owner says even if the issue isn’t obvious to the naked eye, staff members can pull out a microscope to see if the plant has been infected with disease or if insects declared it their new home.

Client Satisfaction
Flagg’s Garden Center can get a big job done. The award-winning landscapers, who have been on staff for more than 15 years, have created major displays that have been featured in the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Through personable service and quality products, Flagg’s Garden Center makes sure its customers are satisfied. “I’ve enjoyed being a customer for many years. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful,” says long-time customer Nancy Froelicher. “There are a great variety of healthy plant choices. The grounds are well organized and maintained. The shopper is welcomed with attractive seasonal and holiday displays.”

Flagg’s Garden Center builds that loyalty and trust through benefit plans like the loyalty program that issues points for every dollar spent. After the customer has accumulated 500 points, they are presented with a $20 gift card. The owner also says they provide different warranty timelines like a 100 percent warranty within 60 days of purchasing plants and a 50 percent warranty within the year of the sale.

Because it is a family-owned and operated business, customers quickly recognize the staff’s friendly faces when they walk in the door.

“I think they appreciate being able to speak with the owner or someone in the family,” says Flagg. “A lot of our employees have been here for more than 10 years. They can come in and ask for someone by name. They have found over the years that they can trust us with advice and we can steer them in the right direction.”
