Five Star Senior Living: A New Beginning

by Lauren Gordon

Five Star Senior Living provides a caring community.

According to studies over the past 10 years from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 70 percent of women aged 45 to 56-years-old work full-time outside the home while caring for aging parents. Roughly 20 percent of these caregivers cut back hours at work, or quit work entirely to care for a parent.

“There are plenty of statistics that state caregivers suffer emotionally and physically,” says Tiffany McGovern, the marketing and admissions director of Five Star Senior Living in Voorhees. “When the relationship changes from ‘mother-daughter’ to ‘caregiver-patient,’ it becomes strained. Letting professional caregivers take over that role allows that relationship to be what it is supposed to.”

The approach behind Five Star Senior Living Communities for assisted living in South Jersey is much the same as a luxury hotel. Excellent service accompanies top-of-the-line medical care, activities and accommodations that cater to both retirees and those who simply cannot live independently.

Helpful Healthcare
When leaving a loved one to Five Star, families can rest assured that their individual needs will be tended to. Going above and beyond New Jersey state requirements, Five Star has nurses on the premises day and night. Residents are free of stresses like taking the correct pills everyday or getting to their doctors; Five Star’s helpful staff is always on standby to make sure residents are cared for.

Helene Weinstein, marketing director at the Cherry Hill community, is proud of the communities' loyal staff.

“We’ve had very little turnover here, which is very unique in the healthcare industry. We are a family here, so I think how we stand out is our residents become our extended family, so we are flexible to meet the needs of the residents that live here.” Before moving in and every year following, residents are fully assessed to ensure they receive quality care that fits to their current state, with the family participating in the entire process. If medical needs and more intense supervision are required as years pass, the Five Star team is there.

A Working Community
Caring for well-being goes deeper than physical needs: “Brain fitness” is extremely important (and well received) in all of the Five Star communities. No longer do residents sit idly by the TV with limited interaction with people. Instead, a visit to any Five Star community will showcase a vibrant community where residents are happy to live.

Phyllis Small, marketing director at the Washington Township center, says her resident community is lively and warm.

“Our Executive Director puts in a lot of initiative ideas to engage our community,” Small says. “We’ve hosted pet-walks and contests that have benefited the outside communities. We have many clubs available to our residents, like our glee club that travels to other facilities and performs. We are not isolated.”

At all of the communities, transportation is readily available to take the residents anywhere they need to go—including group trips for afternoon shopping or casino nights. Book clubs, pottery classes and bingo are available for residents to join at any time.

Worry-Free
Daily chores like cleaning, doing laundry and cooking meals present new physical and mental challenges as people age. Five Star offers fully-furnished and serviced-living conditions at each of its communities. A resident can provide their own furnishings, and the staff will help place them how the resident sees fit. The days of slaving over the stove are gone, as residents enjoy a variety gourmet meals prepared by a chef daily. Even pets are welcome, as long as residents can care for them. “We want people to feel at home here,” McGovern assures. “We’ll help hang pictures, rearrange furniture, whatever we can do to make it comfortable.”

A Fuller Life
Whether you’re looking for chore-free retirement living, or need a little extra help, a residency at Five Star Senior Living will be the start of a new chapter, a quality, full life during the golden years. The taboos of adult care are washed away, as families and residents at Five Star quickly come to understand that it’s a place loved ones will want to be, and with a variety of financial options to explore, it is a place for anyone to call home.

“People think of this as end of life care, but it isn’t,” says Small. “We like to think of it as the beginning of a new, better way of life for the family and the resident.”
