Star Athletes: April, 2012

by Editorial Staff--Suburban Family Magazine
Tommy Glenn (pictured)
Haddonfield
Haddonfield resident Glenn not only came in first in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events at the Ivy League Championship this month, but he broke the Ivy League record. The 19-year-old Haddonfield Memorial graduate and current sophomore at Brown University posted a time of 46.73 seconds in the 100, breaking the league record and qualifying to compete in the NCAA swim tournament.

Megan Lacy
Marlton
Cherokee's Lacy smashed a state record in early March, running a 16:49 5K (that's 3.1 miles, for a 5:31 minutes-per-mile pace) and placing fifth at the New Balance Nationals. She broke the two-year-old state high school record set by a former Haddonfield student. Lacy was also named a Player of the Year by the Adam Taliaferro Foundation.

Will Manion
Haddonfield
After many attempts and hard practices, Manion, a senior at Haddonfield Memorial High School, qualified for the Olympic Trials in swimming. The two-time individual state champion achieved his personal best time of 57.47 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke in late March at an invitational meet, below the Olympic qualifying time of 57.59 seconds. He also recently took first place in the 100-meter backstroke and second place in the 200 meter at the NJSIAA Swim Individual Championships.

Anthony Chiango
Washington Township
Anthony, of the Washington Township Youth wrestling program, wrestled in the State Championships of Southern New Jersey. The 48-pound wrestler placed third at both the state and the regional competition.

Becky Stiles
Medford
Medford's Stiles, now a freshman at Michigan State University, recently traveled to London as a member of the U21 National Field Hockey Team to compete against the England National Team. Stiles had an impressive debut season in 2011 for the Green and White, starting every game and earning the Rookie of the Year title. She recorded one goal and three assists, including the overtime game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Kent State.

Brittany Snow
Tabernacle
This Seneca senior became the school’s all-time scorer for both men and women’s basketball, surpassing the 1,000 point barrier in a March game and finishing out her high school career with 1,400 total points (an average of 17.4 points per game). Aside from her scoring abilities, Snow was also named the Player of the Year and credited by her coach as a tremendous leader. She will take her talents to Stony Brook University on a full athletic scholarship for basketball this fall.

Susan Wysocki
Cherry Hill
Wysocki rose to the No. 1 pitcher spot on Camden Catholic's softball team this year. She had 13 strikeouts in the season-opening game against Paul VI, which they won 5-1. Though she's a junior, she's already committed to play at the University of South Florida. When not hurling for the Irish, Wysocki pitches for her ASA team, which finished second in the nation last summer.

Cody Melton
Columbus
Melton became the only South Jersey wrestler to win at the NJSIAA wrestling championships on March 4 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, facing off against dozens of athletes from across the area. Wrestling in the 285-pound category, this Northern Burlington Regional High School senior brought home the first state wrestling title for his school since 1977.

Christian Martin
Washington Township
Martin needs to find a place to store a trophy as big as he is after placing first in the Jimmy Fisler Memorial Tournament last month, wrestling in the Tots division of elementary school athletes from Washington Township.

Liam Hughes
Moorestown
Hughes, a sophomore on the Moorestown High School golf team, shocked players at the Laurel Creek Country Club when he sunk a hole-in-one in March, the first hole-in-one of the year for the course. The odds of any amateur golfer shooting a hole-in-one are 1 in 12,000; the course only sees about five per year. He later scored an 83 at the Garden State Cup at Blue Heron Pines in Galloway Township in early April.

Gabriella Marvaldi
Mount Laurel
Marvaldi comes from a famous family, but her talent is all her own. The daughter of Olympians Isabelle Brasseur and Rocky Marvaldi, the 11-year-old figure skater is the 2012 U.S. Juvenile Pairs Champion, along with her partner Kyle Hogeboom, after competing at the U.S. Figure Skating Junior National Championships in Utah. The pair train with the Skate Club of South Jersey at the Igloo Ice Rink in Mount Laurel, where Marvaldi's father is the head skating coach.

Eli Woodard
Voorhees
As one of the nation’s top defensive backs, this Eastern senior fielded more than 30 scholarship offers this year from the likes of Notre Dame and Michigan State—and he's only a junior. He runs a 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, maintains a 3.2 GPA and finished this season with 40 tackles. Woodard is now verbally committed to play football at The Ohio State University, but has to wait until the National Letter of Intent signing during his senior year to make it official.
