Carolyn V. Chang

by Rebecca Friedman
A Helping Hand in the Community: Carolyn V. Chang Attorney at Law Provides Help to Families.

As soon as Carolyn V. Chang graduated with her law degree from Rutgers University-Camden, she knew that she wanted to help local families in whatever way possible.

“I think South Jersey is a wonderful place to live,” says Chang.

Established in 1992, the office of Carolyn V. Chang Attorney at Law has been specializing in family law, advocating on behalf of South Jersey children and families for many years.

Navigating the System for Clients
Chang got her start in family law as a law clerk in the Superior Court of New Jersey in Mercer County, gaining valuable experience before launching her own family law practice based in Mount Holly.

As a family law practitioner, she handles issues related to divorce, non-dissolution matters, juvenile law, domestic violence, paternity and child support, adoptions, Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) matters, estate matters and guardianship. “I handle any issue that falls under the umbrella of the family,” she explains.

When prospective clients walk into her office, Chang says, they are typically stressed and fearful about the litigation process. They are not sure what is going to happen to them or what the outcome will be. The process before them can seem very daunting. “Next to the death of a close family member, getting a divorce is the most stressful thing a person can go through,” says Chang.

But thankfully, Chang is able to walk her clients through the process with care and understanding. As counsel for the individual, she can navigate the litigation system for them. At the end of the appointment, Chang wants her clients to walk out of her office feeling reassured about what the future might hold.

“If they feel they can make it through the process and they’re going to be OK, then I feel I met my goal,” she says.

As a proud mother of two—a 19-year-old daughter studying at Rutgers University and a 15-year-old son at Rancocas Valley Regional High School—Chang understands the family dynamic well and seeks to preserve a sense of peace while providing the same level of care and support she’d want for her own family.

“I am a divorce attorney who believes in long-term marriages,” says Chang, who has been married to her husband for 26 years.

A Sponsor in the South Jersey Community
In addition to serving as a family law practitioner, Chang is also a member of numerous organizations, which allows her to have an active role in the Burlington County community and “be of service to the legal community,” she explains.

Chang is the current vice president for the Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey (ABWL) and previously served twice as the association’s treasurer. She is also a member of the American Bar Association; the New Jersey State Bar Association; the state Bar Association’s Family Law Section; and the Garden State Bar Association.

Locally, Chang serves proudly as a member of the Burlington County Bar Association and as a Burlington County representative on the Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee (JPAC) for the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Aside from law, you can count on Chang’s support throughout the South Jersey community through efforts like financial support for area youth baseball, basketball and soccer programs, as well as currently serving as committeewoman for Westampton Township.

Though her children are now growing up, Chang still sponsors youth’s sports teams including the Westampton Indoor Soccer League and the Eastampton Youth Soccer Association. She remains committed to the Caribbean Association of Southern New Jersey’s scholarship fundraising efforts, which provides financial supports to college-bound high school graduates of Caribbean origin.

“This was a way to be a part of my children’s lives, as well as remain involved in the general community I love,” says Chang.

Conveniently located in Mount Holly, the law offices of Carolyn V. Chang, Attorney at Law are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends by appointment.
