Thirteen hardworking Moorestown Friends School students were recognized for their accomplishments in foreign languages by being inducted into world language honor societies at the school recently. Juniors Spencer Bard, Lauren Carney, Ashleigh Cartwright, Aviana Duca, Aaron Ferber, Reena Karasin, Joseph Keirnan, Sarah Master, Emily Purcell and Vincent Salvano were named to the National Spanish Honor Society while Margaret Fischer, Odeymarys Garrido and Larissa Morgan were named to the National French Honor Society. The inductions give further testimony to the school’s efforts to foster cultured and accomplished students.

Morgan Griffith

Morgan Griffith, a senior at Lenape High School, earned The Maureen O'Donnell Oxford Classical Dictionary Award after her outstanding achievements on the National Latin Exam for the past four years. The rare award is presented to students who have obtained four gold medals for their accomplishments in Latin.

Medford Lakes
Three third-grade students at Medford Lakes’ Neeta School had poems published by Philadelphia Stories, Jr., a division of the nonprofit literary journal that caters to young students and aspiring writers. Michael, Grace and Matthew had their work featured after winning the "Young Writers Take the Park" contest.

Cathryn Gericke
Mount Laurel
Gericke won third place in the 2012 Gilda’s Club of South Jersey Poetry and Writing contest. Her poem was considered among dozens of other students and chosen among the top submissions. She received a Nook e-reader and certificate for her winning poem.

Jayne Yan
Marlton
Yan, a student at Cherokee High School, was awarded the Best of Show Prize for her mixed media piece, “Programmed for Change,” in the Congressional Institute-sponsored nationwide high school visual arts competition. U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan presented the award to Yan on May 4 at BCC’s Pemberton campus.

Orchard Valley Middle School Students
Washington Township
Orchard Valley Middle School Principal Steve Buono honored 15 Students of the Month for June. The students were chosen by their teachers for outstanding work.

Sarah Cheatham
Voorhees
Eastern High School senior Cheatham was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role at the statewide Rising Star Awards for her performance in the school play The King and I as Anna Leonowens. Cheatham is no stranger to theater accolades, having previously won the Rachel Kellogg Drama Award and appearing in more than a dozen local musicals, including several leading roles.

Mark Vaughn, Banks Sapnar and Caity Lally
Haddonfield
These three elementary-schoolers earned spots in the South Jersey Elementary Honors Band after being observed and critiqued by the South Jersey Band and Orchestra Directors Association. Clarinet player Vaughn, trumpet player Sapnar, and flutist Lally will create a musical piece along with the other carefully-selected South Jersey musicians.

Washington Township
Washington Township High School senior Celia won the AAA South Jersey Essay Scholarship Contest. Celia will receive $5,000 from AAA South Jersey toward his tuition at the University of Delaware, where he plans to major in accounting.

Madison Stern
Cherry Hill
Cherry Hill High School East student Stern received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for completing more than 500 hours of community service in the United States, Costa Rica, and Israel. The coveted award is reserved for citizens of all ages who devote significant amounts of their time to volunteering and to improving their communities.

Derek Mihalecsko
Marlton
Mihalecsko, 10, saved the life of his friend Gavin Gibson after he began choking during lunch. The Evans Elementary School fourth-grader quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver, which he had learned about in class. Mihalecsko was later honored by the Evesham Township School District Board of Education and received a special commendation for helping a fellow student in an emergency.

Marcus Biddle
Pennsauken
Though Biddle is a homeschooled junior in high school, he began attending Camden County College through the College Now! program, and excels scholastically there with a 3.5 GPA. He is a member of honors societies such as Phi Theta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Psi Beta. He has also been recognized for his accomplished performances as a trombonist with Moorestown Community Band and South Jersey Pops Orchestra, and has earned national recognition for his volunteer efforts.
