Girls’ Tennis

by Marc Narducci

Bishop Eustace Crusaders
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Ania Krawiec has been the Crusaders’ No. 1 singles player her first three years. Last season, she earned first-team all-Olympic Conference National Division honors. Senior Sarah Sperling has been the No. 3 singles player in each of the last two years.

OUTLOOK: The Crusaders will vie for the National Division and the key to success will be the play of the newcomers. Eustace was hit hard by graduation, but this quality program is a conference contender most years and this season should be no different.

Cherokee Chiefs
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Sophomore Amelia Ying won the Olympic Conference Singles title and was runner-up for first singles in the Burlington County Open. Seniors Danielle Bernero and Lauren Tracy were also key singles players for the Chiefs. Players with doubles experience include seniors Taylor Childers and Cassidy Iarussi and sophomore Catherine Nguyen. Two newcomers to watch are freshmen Namratha Konduru and Emily Trudo.

OUTLOOK: With an experienced team returning, the Chiefs should improve on last year’s 8-11 record. In fact, this is a team that is poised to have a winning season, especially with so much talent returning in singles.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Nikita Shukla, among South Jersey’s top doubles players last season, leads the group of returnees. Others returning to this champion team include seniors Amanda Elfman and Paige Leone, junior Tyler Haaz and sophomore Allison Wolf.

OUTLOOK: The Cougars are the defending South Jersey Group 4 champion. Based on tradition, the team should be a factor again, but they have to overcome some key losses to graduation, including all-South Jersey performer Jamie Silverberg and all-conference selection Allison Haaz.

Cherry Hill West Lions
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Junior Michelle Nguyen played first singles last season. Senior Bansili DeSai competed at No. 2 singles. Senior Patricia Sittikul competed at first doubles.

OUTLOOK: With Nguyen and DeSai back, the Lions will be strong at singles. A winning season is definitely a realistic goal, but the key will be developing depth to the team.

Gloucester Catholic Rams
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Rams have just two returning starters—both seniors—although both were the team’s top singles players last year. Jenna Fraterelli was the Rams No. 1 singles player last year and Monica Brogan was the No. 2 singles player.

OUTLOOK: The Rams won eight games last season, but coach Bob Chew envisions this being a rebuilding year with just two returning starters. Much will be decided during challenge matches. With so many new people in the lineup, the Rams would do well to match last year’s record.

Haddonfield Bulldogs
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Taylor Ng has continuously performed as one of the best tennis players in South Jersey history. She went 31-2 last season at No. 1 singles and is now 110-11 in her career. Ng became the first player in school history to win the state singles championship and was the South Jersey Tennis Coaches Association’s Player of the Year. Other key players on the team include junior Amanda Lanciano who was 33-6 at No. 2 singles and junior Erica Pascocello who was 36-4 at No. 3 singles. Junior Victoria Martinez was 43-1 and won the state doubles tournament. Sophomore Rosalind Senopoulos was 22-7 at No. 2 doubles. Among other contenders for varsity spots are seniors Sylvia Strauss and Jillian Magenta, sophomore Raegan Sehdev and freshman Chelsea Brown.

OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs were 28-1 and won the Group 2 state championship. While there were some key losses to graduation, Haddonfield should still begin the season as the No. 1 team in South Jersey and will compete for a state title and Tournament of Champions crown. Jeff Holman (962-122) is among the top coaches not only in the state, but nationwide. This year’s lineup has the makings of a truly special team.

Lenape Indians
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Junior Melissa Olt earned second-team all-conference honors at No. 2 singles with junior Kesha Bauer competing at No. 3 singles. Last year, senior Joy Chen and sophomore Lauren Gershman earned second-team all-conference honors at No. 1 doubles while seniors Christina Cammarotta and Sarah Muccilli competed at No. 2 doubles.

OUTLOOK: The Indians were 12-7 last season and advanced to the South Jersey Group 4 semifinals before falling 3-2 to Millville. With so much experience, the Indians could not only improve the win total but advance further in the state tournament this year.

Moorestown Quakers

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Junior Breezy Maravich was 29-6 last season, earning the title of Burlington County Player of the Year. Senior Shelby Burke was 28-8. The lone returning doubles player is junior Kelly Hopkins. Among other contenders for spots are seniors Kelsey Mercer, Julia Gips and Amanda Zajac.

OUTLOOK: Like Haddonfield’s Holman, Coach Bill Kingston (721-79) is among the best in the country and he will field another competitive team this season. The Quakers are the defending South Jersey Group 3 champion and will be difficult to dethrone. While Haddonfield will enter the season as South Jersey’s No. 1 team, Moorestown has the ability to be the Bulldogs’ biggest challenger.

Moorestown Friends Foxes
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Sophomore Katie Teitelbaum was 12-4 and an honorable mention Friends League selection. Senior Lauren Carney was 13-4 at first doubles and she could be playing singles this year. Senior Claire Langlotz was 9-7 and most likely will play first doubles. In addition, senior Logan Horn is a letter winner who likely will be a doubles player. Watch out for newcomer Erin Chen who has a strong USTA 14-and-under ranking and most likely will compete at No. 1 or No. 2 singles.

OUTLOOK: The Foxes finished 12-7 overall last season and 3-4 in the competitive Friends League. With some key losses to graduation, a realistic goal would be to match last year’s win total. Chen will be a major addition, but the development of other players holds the key for Coach Mike Bodary’s team.

Paul VI Eagles
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Eagles have a solid group of veterans. Of the players expected to vie for spots are seniors Jessica Castiglia, Alexandria D’Orazio, Kaitlin McCafferty, Angelina Taylor and Monica Thomas, juniors Blaire Adkins, Carly Devenny, Monique Duckett and Samantha Zanetti and sophomore Desiree King.

OUTLOOK: New coach Andrew Larzelere feels he will have a highly competitive team this year, but he will only know for sure after the team begins practice. Paul VI has directed a solid tennis program for years and this tradition should continue under Larzelere.

Seneca Golden Eagles

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Three junior singles players will return this season. Last year, Alexandria Felt was at No. 1 singles, Amanda Ritter was at No. 2 singles and Angela Errigo competed at No. 3. Senior Jaden Tyrrell and junior Jordan Meyer played first doubles last season while senior Tiffany Roberts and junior Leah Dinsmore also return with doubles experience, playing No. 2. Others providing depth to the team include senior Karina Hinz, juniors Michaela Keating and Lizzy Raffo, and sophomores Alexa Chaloupka, Angela DeKlerk and McKenzie McGlone.

OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles were 15-5 last season and, with so much returning experience, this team should continue to show improvement. In addition, there are several freshmen who could improve the depth for coach Sue Johnson.

Shawnee Renegades
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Delaney Kipple was a first-team all-conference performer at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Vienna Cordier is the Renegades other returning starter, having played No. 2 singles. Key returning letter winners are sophomore Cameron Kroberger and juniors Narelle Kipple and Colby Schweibenz.

OUTLOOK: The Renegades won the Olympic Patriot Division, going 8-0, but things will be more difficult this year since the Olympic is consolidating to two divisions. Still, Shawnee will continue to be a competitive program, but going unbeaten in the division might be too much to expect.

Washington Township Minutemaids
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Ave Paraggio was a No. 1 singles player and all-conference performer. Other veterans are junior Kelsey Bevenour, who played singles, junior Margail Muller, who played singles and doubles, and senior Vicky Tran, who was a doubles player. Four returning letter winners with doubles experience are Taylor Gallo, Mary Lloyd, Maricia Marchetta and Lauren Palmerchuk.

OUTLOOK: In many conferences, the Minutemaids would be among the favorites, but not in the Olympic American with the likes of Cherry Hill East, Eastern and Lenape. Even so, Washington Township should remain a competitive team, capable of a winning record and of competing favorably in the South Jersey Group 4 tournament.
