by Marc Narducci

Bishop Eustace Crusaders
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior forward Nicolette Wilkins and senior midfielder Taylor Baranowsky each had seven goals and four assists and both were second-team all-conference selections. Wilkins has committed to Drexel. Senior forward Sam Brown had four goals and four assists. Among the returning letter winners were senior forward/midfielder Ashley Gault, junior midfielder Taylor Tralie, junior midfielder/defender Ally Fiato, junior forward-midfielder Cayla Barry and junior defenders Cristina Johnson and Kristen Kelbon. Among the newcomers to watch are sophomore midfielder/forward Caitlin Golden and junior keeper Ellise Sullivan.

OUTLOOK: The Crusaders overcame a slow start to finish 10-8-1 and earn a share of the Olympic Conference National Division title with Paul VI under then first-year coach Lindsey Finnegan in 2011. Despite some key losses to graduation, the Crusaders will again contend for a division and sectional crown and they have the ability to be among the top 10 teams in South Jersey.

Camden Catholic Fighting Irish
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior defender Tracey Cadogan and senior midfielder/defender Shannon McCormick each earned second-team all-conference honors. McCormick contributed six goals and Cadogan had two goals and one assist. Sophomore Juliet Esposito, who can play any position, had two goals and one assist. Other returning starters include sophomore midfielder Megan Kilpatrick and junior defender Cara Racobaldo. Three key returning letter winners are seniors Colleen Stellman and Maureen Cornely, and junior Gabby Curry.

OUTLOOK: New coach Varsay Lewis only has one way to go after the Irish won just once last season. Cadogan could be among the elite defenders in South Jersey. The key will be to develop some depth. The nucleus is there for the Irish to move up in the right direction.

Cherokee Chiefs
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder-defender Devon Cummings and senior defender Kristin Sullivan are both four-year varsity performers. Cummings is a Marist recruit and Sullivan will attend Drexel. Last season, Cummings was first-team all-conference while Sullivan and sophomore forward/midfielder Ashley Koester were second-team selections. Koester is the leading returning scorer with six goals. Other returning starters are junior midfielders Christine DiLullo and Sarah Jackson. Key returning letter winners are senior forward/keeper Melissa Gall, senior defender Caitlyn O’Brien, senior midfielder Kelly Ethridge, senior forward/midfielder Olivia Mohnacs, junior defender Lilly Navarra and sophomore keeper Devon Kearns.

OUTLOOK: The Chiefs hope to improve on last year’s 8-11-1 record. They were 7-2-1 in the division, which shows that Cherokee was competitive with the best teams in South Jersey. Cummings and Sullivan are good leaders and Cherokee appears improved, but the Chiefs are probably a year away from challenging the likes of Lenape and Eastern for the division title.

Cherry Hill East Cougars
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielder Caitlin Delaney was a first-team all-conference choice, while senior defender Erica Hansen earned second-team honors. Delaney is a fine athlete who will play lacrosse at Sacred Heart University. Other starters back on this young team include sophomore midfielder Emily Rimdzius and three juniors—midfielders Alex Manofu and McKenzie Miller and defender Dana Barth. Two key returning letter winners are senior defender Michelle Langborgh and junior midfielder Brooke Beatty. Among newcomers to watch are sophomore forward Nikki Zaso and senior striker Nikki Friedman.

OUTLOOK: The Cougars were 5-11 in coach Katie Boyle’s first season while competing in arguably the most difficult division in the state, the Olympic American. So it’s not realistic for East to be a contender in the division, but improving last year’s record is something this still young team is capable of doing.

Cherry Hill West Lions
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Lauren Anderson is among the more accomplished returning goal scorers in South Jersey and was a second-team all-conference choice. Senior midfielder Meghan Dumser and junior keeper Christiana Ogunsami were first-team all-conference choices. Junior defender Erin McBride was a second-team all-conference choice. Two other starters back are junior forwards Jessica Iannetta and Molly Swanson. Several key letter winners include senior midfielder Kathleen McGlinn, sophomore forward Linda Kovacs and three juniors—defender Taylor Gentile, midfielder Mary Smyth and forward Mackenzie Tyler.

OUTLOOK: The Lions were 6-8-1 while competing in a very difficult Olympic National Division. The division is no easier this season, but West appears to be improved. A keeper like Ogunsami will keep the Lions in every game and Anderson and Dumser should spark a strong attack for coach Marie O’Neill. A winning record and potential contention are realistic goals for the Lions.

Eastern Vikings
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior forward-midfielder Madison Tiernan is among the top players in the state. She is a Rutgers recruit, who had 21 goals and 13 assists last year. Tiernan is among nine returning starters. The others are senior midfielder Lauren Minghenelli, senior midfielder Sarah Kane, senior midfielder Jackie Puchala, senior defender Jamee Simone, sophomore forward Sydney Jackson, junior defender/midfielder Miranda Konstantinides, junior defender Christina Padovani, and sophomore keeper Imani Taylor. Besides Tiernan, among the all-South Jersey candidates are Konstantinides, Padovani and Taylor. Key letter winners include junior midfielder Alexa Rubino, junior Zahra Alber and sophomore defender Maxine Turchin. Sophomore forward Sam Mlkvy leads the newcomers, which, according to coach Jamie McGroarty, includes many talented freshmen.

OUTLOOK: The Vikings were 16-6-2 and finished runner-up in the S.J. Group 4 tournament. Once again the Vikings will be a contender for a state title and a major threat to Lenape in the Olympic Conference American Division and for the No. 1 spot in South Jersey.

Gloucester Catholic Rams
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Sophomore goalie Angela Antonini and junior defender Maria Petrongolo were first-team all-conference selections. Senior forward Maddie Hogan, sophomore midfielder Elysa Virella, and senior defender Katie O’Shea were second team choices, while senior midfielder Michelle McMullen was an honorable mention choice.

OUTLOOK: The Rams were 12-2-2 and won the Tri-County Diamond Division. There are some key players to replace including Old Dominion recruit Devin Dougherty, who scored 16 goals. If Gloucester Catholic can replace that type of offense, the Rams will have an excellent chance of defending their division title.

Haddonfield Bulldogs
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior sweeper Olivia Blaber is among the top defenders in South Jersey. Other returning starters are senior defenders Gretchen Kiep and Bridget Yako, senior forward Emily Carson, junior midfielder Kylie Kirk and sophomore defender/ midfielder Carly Bonnet. Kirk is one of many impressive players in South Jersey from the junior class.

OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs are the defending Colonial Liberty and S.J. Group 2 champions and will make another serious run in both areas. Despite suffering key graduation losses, Haddonfield as usual will have one of South Jersey’s top defenses. One priority for coach Glenn Gess is developing a keeper, but pencil in the Bulldogs for the South Jersey top 10 and another banner season for a team that has six South Jersey championships and three state titles since 2005.

Lenape Indians
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Seniors Rachel Johnson and Tori Prager were all-South Jersey selections. Prager is a Rutgers recruit who had 12 goals and 17 assists. Two other returning starters are junior defender Courtney Norton and junior forward Rachelle Ross. A long list of returning letter winners includes senior goalie Nikki Brooks, senior defender Colleen Cunningham, senior midfielder Ali Zumpetta, sophomore goalie Alicia Hampton, sophomore forward Lizzie Kinkler and sophomore midfielder Kenie Wright. Two newcomers to watch include junior midfielder Nicole Donnelly and sophomore defender Brielle Stoner.

OUTLOOK: The Indians have ruled the state, having won five consecutive state Group 4 titles. Kevin Meder (148-13-7) has done one of the most remarkable coaching jobs in any sport. Some feel this year’s team may take a step back after losing seven starters, including consensus S.J. Player of the Year Katie Rigby. Still, Lenape will once again compete for the No. 1 spot in South Jersey, and a state title. Prager has big-time ability and Johnson is an excellent marker. This will be the least experienced team in Lenape’s most recent run, but nobody should discount the Indians, even though they may be on paper behind a team like Eastern in the Olympic American and South Jersey Group 4.

Moorestown Quakers
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Nicole Varela is a Georgetown recruit who is among the top defenders in South Jersey. Also back on defense are senior Olivia Kraemer and Alyssa Lukridge. Other returning starters are senior forward Megan Kelly, junior forwards Frankie Angeleri and Anne Keim and junior midfielder Marie McCool.

OUTLOOK: The Quakers are the defending South Jersey Group 3 champions and will be a threat to defend their crown. As usual under coach Bill Mulvihill, this will be among the top defensive teams in South Jersey. The key will be to find consistent scoring, although with this defense, Moorestown won’t need a high powered offense to be successful.

Paul VI Eagles
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior defender Sarah Harris is a team captain who is a fine leader and returning starter on the backline. Juniors Jacki Carty and Kristen Morawski are returning starters and form one of the area’s top midfield duos, making Paul VI very strong in the middle of the field. Both players earned second-team all-conference honors. Junior Kristen McShane was the starting keeper last year and classmate Stephanie Verna is also expected to challenge for time. Senior forward Catherine Fiore is the fastest player on the team and gives the Eagles a strong player up top. Senior midfielder/forward Erica McDonough, like Fiore, has exceptional speed and will bolster the attack. Junior defender Brooke Palmieri provides a high work rate and gives the backline a steady presence. Junior defender Gabrielle Rainey was injured much of last year and will fortify the defense. Two players who return after taking a year off are senior forward Kristin Bate and senior forward-midfielder Casey Baker.

OUTLOOK: The Eagles suffered major losses to graduation, but they still have the capability to contend in the Olympic Conference National Division and in S.J. Non-Public A. Paul VI went 16-6-2 last year, shared the division title with Eustace and earned a third consecutive trip to the sectional final. This team is capable of these achievements, but may need the first part of the season to get the non-starters from last year some valuable experience. Coach Keith Walters is in the top tier of S.J. coaches.

Seneca Golden Eagles
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior midfielders Kim Richer and Molly Garthwaite will provide leadership and production after both earning second-team all-conference honors.

OUTLOOK: The Golden Eagles were 9-8-3 last season and, to match that record, they will have to replace the offense of graduated all-conference forward Shelby Lyon. Once again, this should be a competitive program. The Golden Eagles won’t be favored but are still a dangerous team in the Olympic National.

Shawnee Renegades
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior goalie Glade Nugent, senior forward Shannon Nugent and senior midfielder Erin Smith were first-team all-conference performers. Smith is a Rutgers recruit and among the top players in South Jersey. Other returning starters are junior forward Kayla Bertolino, junior defender Maggie Sande, junior midfielder McKenna Burns and sophomore defender Taylor Ryan. Among the returning letter winners are senior midfielder Misty Hinshillwood, senior forward Cassidy Lessig, junior midfielder/forward Caroline Shinske, and sophomore midfielder/forwards Gianna Pizoli and Ariana Gerber.

OUTLOOK: The good news is that the Renegades have the ability to be a top-5 team in South Jersey. The unfortunate news: so do three other teams in the Olympic Conference American Division—Eastern, Lenape and Washington Township. So once again this will be among South Jersey’s top programs. The Renegades went 13-7-1 and could improve that mark this year. Shawnee won’t be listed as a favorite, but will be a serious contender in both the American Division and S.J. Group 4.

Washington Township Minutemaids
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior forward Allegra Ondrejka had five goals and three assists in four games before suffering a knee injury. Senior midfielder Kaitlyn Buoni (2 goals, 2 assists) was a second-team all-conference selection. Senior back Emily Haggerty (3 goals, 4 assists) was also a second-team choice. Sophomore forward Cathryn McCarry had six goals and three assists in 10 games after being called up from JV when Ondrejka was injured. Other returning starters include senior midfielders Kylie Calandra and Jenna Ierly and senior defenders Bianca Richardson and Tamara Shoyer. Among the returning letter winners are senior keepers Jenna Kaiser and Sara Armor, senior midfielders Karlie DiPietro, Alicia Galiano and Layal Issa, senior forward Alison Galiano and junior forward Danielle Kitzinger. The team will be joined by several promising newcomers, including junior defender Kelsey Powell, junior midfielders Reilly O’Connell and Jamie Mitchell, junior defender Alyssa Petner and sophomore defender Samantha DiClementi.

OUTLOOK: Coming off an 11-5-3 season, the Minutemaids will again be contenders in the Olympic American and South Jersey Group 4. The difficulty arises with the competition. Lenape is the five-time defending division and state champion and Eastern will also be a serious threat to win both titles. The Minutemaids have the ability to beat anybody in South Jersey and, if they were in any other division, they might be the preseason favorite.
